Electric cars are becoming increasingly popular on the roads. And with the green transition comes new questions like: Can my electric vehicle tow a trailer? The answer is yes but not all EVs are built for it.
Fortunately, going electric doesn’t mean giving up the ability to tow. In fact, many of today’s electric cars are fully capable of towing both open and closed trailers. That’s great news if you’re planning a move, heading to the recycling center, or just bringing home bulky items from a weekend shopping spree.
Can your electric car tow a trailer?
If you’re planning to borrow a trailer for a move, garden project, or a trip to the recycling center, it’s important to know exactly how much your electric car can tow. There’s a wide range, some EVs aren’t approved for towing at all, while others can handle up to 1,800 kg or more.
We recommend checking this handy overview from the EV Database to find out what your specific car model is allowed to tow. It lists both the permitted towing weight and whether a tow bar is even approved for the vehicle: Check here at EV Database.
Examples of electric cars with towing capacity
Here are a few popular EV models that are approved for towing:
- Tesla Model Y Long Range – up to 1,600 kg
- Volkswagen ID.4 – up to 1,000–1,200 kg (depending on the version)
- Kia EV6 – up to 1,600 kg
- Skoda Enyaq iV – up to 1,200–1,400 kg
On the other hand, smaller EVs like the Renault Zoe and Fiat 500e are not approved for towing. So if you own one of these and are planning to use a Freetrailer, be sure to double-check your car’s specifications before hitting the road.
Towing a trailer with an electric car
At Freetrailer, we’ve seen a growing number of EV drivers wanting to borrow trailers – and the good news is: they absolutely can! Our trailers are compatible with most vehicles, including electric cars equipped with a tow bar.
You can borrow both open and closed trailers directly through our app. Just make sure of the following:
- Your EV has a fitted tow bar.
- You know your car’s maximum towing capacity.
- You stay within the legal weight limits for the trailer and load.
Once you’ve got that sorted, simply open the Freetrailer app, reserve a trailer, and you’re ready to go.
